Metric signs in Missouri Clayton A metric speed limit sign in Clayton, MO. In the 1970s the signs were placed on major arterial entrances to Clayton, originally at the suggestion of Dr. Anton deS. Brasunas, who was a retired University of Missouri professor and then-manager of USMA’s Kansas, Missouri, and southern Illinois region. His suggestion was implemented by then-mayor James C. Laflin. The signs were eventually removed due to complaints that they were confusing, which in turn caused enforcement issues for the Police Department. This photo appeared in the September 1977 Metric Bulletin, and the signs were also featured in the October 1986 USMA Newsletter. Gateway Arch, St. Louis Metric and customary height sign inside the Gateway Arch at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis. Note that the symbol “m” for metres should not be in uppercase, although it would be acceptable to spell out “metres” in uppercase. Photo courtesy of B. Tristan Denyer, 7 February 2006.
